Safety certificates

See Marjac Automotive for Safety Inspections here in Maroochydore.

In Queensland Roadworthy Certificates (RWCs) are now referred to as Safety Certificates.

A safety certificate is issued after a vehicle passes a minimum safety standard inspection. A safety certificate covers basic things that could affect the safe operation of the vehicle, such as:

  • tyres
  • brakes
  • steering
  • suspension
  • body rust or damage
  • windscreen
  • lights

You must obtain and display a safety certificate if you plan to sell your vehicle.

You will need to display a valid safety certificate on any registered light vehicle from the moment you offer the vehicle for sale. A safety certificate is also a requisite for unregistered used vehicles (second hand) and also registered interstate vehicles as part of the Queensland pre-registration process although there are some exemptions.

Do I always I need a safety certificate to sell?

There are some exemptions that include (but are not limited to) when the vehicle is unregistered or being traded between licensed motor dealers or when a vehicle is being sold for parts or restoration (but these must be de-registered before being offered for sale). It's always best to check with an approved person if you're unsure to avoid costly fines.

What do I do with my safety certificate?

When selling, safety certificates must be always be displayed in a clearly visible spot on the vehicle, for example:

  • Motorbikes - on the front forks or guard
  • Cars - in the car windscreen or window
  • Trailers -on the draw-bar

If you fail to display a safety certificate on your vehicle as soon as you offer it for sale you risk an on-the-spot fine of $500.

For the most current information on Car Safety Certificates and exemptions phone the Department of Transport and Main Roads on 13 23 80 or contact us today.

Safety certificates can only be issued by Approved Inspection Stations.
